Tree service keywords: what homeowners actually search
By Luke Ahern, founder of Ads Astra Labs · Updated November 5, 2026
Whether you're building pages for SEO or choosing what to bid on in Google Ads, it helps to know what homeowners actually type. The figures below come from Google Keyword Planner for the United States and Canada combined, pulled on November 5, 2026. They're averages across a year, so expect more searches in storm season and spring and fewer in midwinter.
"Near me" searches are the biggest by far

"Tree service near me" averages about 135,000 searches a month, and Google groups it with close variants such as "tree care services near me" and "tree contractors near me". "Tree removal near me" and "tree trimming near me" each average about 60,500, "arborist near me" about 33,100 and "stump grinding near me" about 22,200.
You can't put "near me" on a page and rank for it. Google answers those searches with the map pack and with businesses close to the searcher, which is why your Google Business Profile matters more than any keyword on your site.
Service keywords: removal, trimming, stumps
Without "near me", "tree service" averages about 90,500 searches a month, "tree removal" about 40,500, "tree trimming" about 40,500, "tree removal service" about 14,800 and "tree cutting service" about 14,800. "Stump grinding" is large, about 90,500, but it's mixed with people shopping for equipment.
These are the words your service pages should be built around: one page per service you want more of, each describing real work in the places you serve. Our tree service SEO page covers how.
Cost searches mean someone is getting ready to hire
"Tree removal cost", "tree removal prices" and "tree removal estimate" average about 12,100 searches a month each. People searching these are close to calling someone. A page or section that explains plainly what drives the price of a removal (size, access, proximity to the house, cleanup) earns those visits.
What a click costs in Google Ads
Keyword Planner's top-of-page bid ranges show roughly what you would pay to appear at the top for each search. For "tree removal near me" the range was about $4.69 to $29.19 a click, for "tree service near me" about $4.28 to $27.93, for "tree trimming near me" about $4.53 to $28.00 and for "stump grinding near me" about $3.28 to $16.91. Your own costs will vary by city and by how well the account is run.
Those numbers are why wasted clicks matter. At twenty dollars a click, a handful of irrelevant searches a day adds up to hundreds a month. Our Google Ads for tree services page covers how we keep spend on searches that hire.
Keywords to exclude
Some of the biggest tree searches aren't customers. "Stump grinder for sale" averages about 12,100 searches a month from people buying equipment. Big brand names such as "Davey Tree company" are people looking for that company. Plant searches like "service berry" and "fig tree care" are gardeners. Job seekers search "tree trimming jobs" and "arborist courses".
In Google Ads, add these as negative keywords from day one, and keep reading the search terms report every month for new ones.
